“Have we lost our way ?”

I have to say
In a way
That would be unsubtle
We have lost
The point at which
We would expect
To have as our focus

It might instead do
To say nicky-macky-noo
Rather than a platitude
Or something quant
Rather than worthless words
And hot air
To fill an unfillable space

I have to report
As a retort
That might seem blunt
We have gained
The existential equivalent of
A morbid obesity
And have lost our way.

I’m not quite sure
If there’s a cure
For this malignant condition
I don’t know
Whether I want one
Better to ramble
Across the far reaches of memory
And close our eyes and think of better times.
